Lab Technician
Reports to: Lab Manager

About Bench Brewing:
Located in the heart of Niagara’s wine country, the Bench brewery is located on the site of the historic Maple Grove Public School in Beamsville, Ontario. Our brewery is a place for our guests to relax, learn, and experience the craft of brewing beer.
The Bench Brewing campus sits across eight beautiful acres of farmland and features a 50hL brewing system, a tap and tasting room, a beer garden, a ‘funk house’ for our wild ale and barrel fermentation program, and our very own hops field.
Our property houses a beautiful church built in 1938 that has been converted to the Fieldstone at Bench facility. It has an indoor seating capacity of approximately 70 guests and during the warmer seasons the events lawn can seat up to 225 guests.
Bench is a certified B Corporation and strives to be a leader in sustainability, having achieved a zero-wastewater footprint and Carbon Neutral certification by Radicle Climate Smart.
The Role:
Reporting to the Lab Manager, the Lab Technician plays an integral part of the day-to-day operations at Bench. The Lab Technician conducts quality testing throughout the brewing process. The successful candidate will gain valuable hands-on experience in a fast paced and innovative craft brewery.
Responsibilities:
• Sample collection of raw materials, in process and final products to conduct testing
• Responsible for quality testing on raw materials, in-process beer, packaged products, and yeast. This would include Microbial (e.g., Plating and PCR) and Analytical Chemistry testing (e.g., Alcohol, Colour, Bitterness pH analysis etc.)
• Perform necessary recording, reporting, sensory testing, packaging checks and yeast management tasks.
• Perform standardized test on beer to ensure the beer is in compliance with company standards
• Investigate product concerns, complaints, and/or packaging issues and identify ways to improve quality/ procedures.
• Maintain equipment calibration, complete routine checks on equipment, maintain records, maintain lab supplies and ensure the lab areas are tidy.
• Take part in ongoing product and process improvements
• Adhere to all applicable SOP manual procedures.
• Follow all health and safety requirements
• Other duties as required
Qualifications:
• University Degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Food Science or related field
• Experience in QC/QA in the beverage industry is considered an asset
• Experience with standard microbiology techniques (Plating, PCR, Microscopy, etc.) considered a strong asset
• Experience with Laboratory maintenance is an asset
• Knowledge of brewing & beer sensory
• Demonstrated passion for and interest in beer and craft brewing
• Knowledge in GMP’s and Food safety principles
• Excellent communication skills and a good team player
• Experienced with Microsoft office with a good understanding of Excel
• Flexibility in schedule, including weekend work.
• A willingness to lift the occasional keg or case of beer!

Material Handler/Shunt Driver

The Role:
Reporting to the Logistics Manager, the primary role of the Material Handler/Shunt Driver is to ensure the safe operation of Bench’s commercial vehicles in shunting pallets of beer and brewing materials between the brewery and our off-site warehouse. Other responsibilities include inventory counts, vendor pickups, special event drop-offs, and general warehouse support.
Responsibilities:
• Safely shunting and tracking daily finished packaging runs from the brewery to our warehouse.
• Driving a forklift or using an electric pallet jack as needed (loading and unloading pallets for workers/employees).
• Ensure that raw materials and finished goods are stored safely and accurately within our warehouse or brewery.
• Perform physical inventory by counting and verifying quantity of finished products against pick slip.
• Transferring pallets of cans/trays and other materials based on needs of production.
• Load, stack, and secure items safely into position on the truck to prevent damage during travel routes.
• Performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections on truck daily to ensure vehicle is in optimal working condition then communicate any issues with Manager.
• Ensuring compliance with all Bench warehouse safety principles and procedures.
• Maintaining a clean driving record and operates vehicle in a safe and lawful manner.
• The ability to backfill and help with Production or Warehouse Team.
Complete daily driver logs.
• Prioritize trailer moves to support warehouse efficiencies and optimize yard occupancy.
Qualifications:
• Must have clean and valid G class license. A clean and valid DZ/AZ license is considered an asset.
• Must have forklift certification or be willing to get one.
• Minimum one year of experience in a logistics role, ideally in beer or other consumer packaged goods.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.
• Past experience driving a Hino is considered an asset.
• Truck driving/delivery experience a strong asset.
• Prior warehouse and/or forklift operations experience.
• Willing and able to work flexible hours.
• Physically able to lift and manipulate heavy objects (over 50lb).

RETAIL ASSOCIATE Reports to: Hospitality Manager About Bench Brewing: The Role: Reporting to the Hospitality Manager, the primary role of the Retail Associate is to deliver an
exceptional experience to all brewery guests with authentic and enthusiastic hospitality. The
Retail Associate will be the first point of contact with guests and as such will deliver a Bench’s
Best first impression. Responsibilities:
• Greet and communicate with guests as an ambassador of Bench Brewing Company
and our community
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of all Bench retail items
• Be a product expert on all Bench beer and assist guests in selecting beer that will best
suit their tastes and needs
• Proactively make recommendations and suggestions to assist guests in their
shopping experience
• Assist in the fulfillment of curbside and online orders • Participate in regular beer tastings and information sessions to maintain an
exceptional knowledge of all Bench Brewing products
• Retail opening & closing duties, including stocking, moving furniture, cleaning and
side duties
• Escalate and communicate guest complaints to supervisors for prompt and effective
service recovery
• Accurately punch in and process payment transactions through the retail POS system • Assist in monthly inventory • Participate in the execution of events (at times off-site events)
